Mankind has been fascinated with puzzles of one type or another since ancient times. From the mythical character of Theseus finding his way through the maze to do battle with the Minotor, to today’s complex mathematical conundrums, puzzles have always been with us, it seems. Throughout history they have sometimes been intellectual ones, using numbers, symbols and words, while others were three dimensional, employing stones, string, straws, wooden blocks – and a huge range of other raw materials that their creators could conceive of turning into puzzles.

The Chinese rings puzzle, for example, many have originated in China as early as the second century AD. In the early 1920s P. McMahon, a British mathematician and naval officer, invented the 30 coloured cube puzzle – marketed under the name Mayblox. The puzzle involved colouring. A cube with 6 colours in 30 ways (not counting rotations). But perhaps the most famous puzzle of all time was one created in the 1970s. Rubik, a Professor in the Department of Graphics Design at the University of Budapest, invented the Rubik’s cube, with its mind-bending block twisting logic conundrum.

This is a tradition that has lasted for over 800 years and is one of the oldest and longest civic processions in the world. The overall procession begins at 11 am where the new Mayor of London embarks on the trip to the Royal Courts to pledge loyalty to the Crown. If all goes by plan the last of the procession will reach the Royal Courts at around 12:15 and then start back to Mansion House at 1 pm and the overall procession will end at 2:30. After that until 5 pm there is a break where visitors can go on guided walks, have tea, or enjoy the rest of the activities. Finally, at 5 pm is the beautiful fireworks show. Throughout the day there are times where there isn’t much going on, plus the children may get tired or irritable because they cannot run around, can’t see what is going on at all times, or perhaps just want to do something else. Instead of heading home make sure that you take the Perplexus along, it will keep them by your side and busy until they are ready to continue watching the activities around them.

When things get out of control and you feel like your head is ready to explode simply take out one or two of these great puzzles. Of course the more the better, but a stopwatch will also do the trick if you have only one. Then, place all of the kid’s names in a hat and pull out each one by one to determine who goes when. Then assign someone to write down the times and someone to keep an eye on the stopwatch. Before you know it they will be working together and helping each other out with getting through the levels. You can actually have them all do one level each as some may get a bit impatient until it is their turn.
